Newfound Press Editorial Policies

See Information for Authors and Information for Journal Editors for more detail.

General Information

Newfound Press publishes peer-reviewed works that may have a limited and/or specialized audience. We invite submissions of book length manuscripts, queries about multimedia presentations, and proposals from editors for Newfound Press to host scholarly journals or other serial works. The Press especially seeks works that incorporate multimedia and other types of innovative presentation. Also of particular interest are works with interdisciplinary approaches and those relevant to Tennessee and the Southeast.

Newfound Press presentation includes a book cover design and searchable PDF files. One file contains the entire work, and others typically contain sections with individual chapters and front and back matter. Additional files may incorporate multimedia elements. Newfound Press provides copyediting and layout.

Newfound Press hosts peer-reviewed journals and other serial publications managed by an editor whose sponsor (e.g. scholarly society, university department) accepts responsibility for the content. Journals are presented through the Berkeley Electronic Press (bepress) Digital Commons journals management platform. The software supports browse and key word searching, as well as multimedia files. Journals published by Newfound Press include the publisher’s branding while operating on the same software as the library’s Trace digital showcase and archive. Journal editors may use the Trace platform for the complete editorial process from manuscript solicitation through peer review and article publication. Newfound Press assists journal editors with web page design. Editors receive training and ongoing assistance from Newfound Press for using the journal publishing system.

Criteria for Publication

• Demonstrates scholarly rigor
• Offers an innovative presentation, particularly involving multimedia
• Contains content and approach of potential interest across disciplines
• Reflects regional relevance
• Merits wide dissemination and preservation, but unlikely to be published by a traditional press because of narrow focus or innovative format

Editorial Style

Newfound Press uses The Chicago Manual of Style for text and the bepress Digital Commons platform for journal hosting.

Newfound Press recommends the use of the following file types to increase the likelihood of safely migrating files into the future:

  1. Images: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF
  2. Audio: AIFF, MP3 "unprotected" (DRM-free) AAC, WAVE
  3. Video: MPEG, QuickTime
  4. Data: XML, Comma-separated values

Review Process

When manuscripts are received, members of the Editorial Board identify peer reviewers, soliciting scholars in appropriate disciplines to review submissions. Reviewers address questions on the Newfound Press manuscript review form or the Newfound Press manuscript review form for multimedia. The Newfound Press Editorial Board member leading peer review summarizes comments and provides a recommendation about publication. Once Newfound Press decides to publish a work, the author works closely with editorial and production staff.

Production

Works accepted for publication receive processing that adds value to the content by promoting discovery and use. Newfound Press services include consultation, management of the peer review process for one-time publications, presentation design, Web access 24/7, procurement of ISBN and ISSN, application of cataloging/metadata tags according to international standards, marketing, preservation of current and archival files, and collection of use data.

Intellectual Property

Copyright owners grant Newfound Press non-exclusive rights to disseminate their work in perpetuity. (See sample form.) This arrangement means that others may also publish the work and receive permission from the copyright holder to publish or disseminate in other forms. Newfound Press requires authors and editors to include copyright information with a statement of ownership, an invitation to reproduce content under certain conditions, and a warning about possible infringements. Use of Creative Commons licenses is encouraged. See more at Newfound Press Author Rights and Copyright Information from UT Libraries.
